Joint Degree System

Joint Degree System

A mechanism in which two or more Japanese universities jointly organize and implement an academic program and award a single academic degree under the name of both/all the universities concerned. The system was created via the amendment to the Standards for Establishment of Universities that entered into force in March 2009. Professional and vocational universities, graduate schools, professional graduate schools, junior colleges and professional and vocational junior colleges may also organize domestic joint degree programs. For such a program not confined to a single institution, a report indicating the condition of education and research activities of the entire program needs to be appended to institutional university evaluation result.
In the domestic joint degree system, unlike the united graduate school system, academic degrees are awarded in the name of all the universities involved. There is also an international joint degree system for joint international academic programs.
