学校教育法第109条第２項に基づき、大学、短期大学及び高等専門学校に対して実施される、機関単位の評価。対象機関の教育研究、組織運営及び施設整備等の総合的な状況について、評価機関が定める大学評価基準に適合しているか否かを認定する。大学等は政令で定める期間（７年以内）ごとにこの評価を受けることが義務付けられている。

Certified evaluation and accreditation of Japanese universities, junior colleges and colleges of technology conducted on an institution-by-institution basis. It involves the decision on whether the overall condition of the institution’s education and research, organizational management and facility provision meets the Standards for Evaluation and Accreditation of Universities stipulated by the certified evaluation and accreditation organization. Universities and colleges are obliged to undergo this evaluation once in the period which does not exceed seven years as specified by the Cabinet Order.
