大学 University
学術の中心として広く知識を授けるとともに、深く専門の学芸を教授研究し、知的、道徳的及び応用的能力を展開させることを目的とする高等教育機関。大学(学士課程)の入学資格は、原則として12年又は指定された学校教育(初等中等教育)の課程を修了した者に認められている。また、外国の学校教育における12年の課程を修了した者又はこれに準ずる者、外国の大学入学資格である国際バカロレア、アビトゥア、バカロレア、GCEAレベルを保有する者、12年の学校教育課程修了相当の学力認定試験である「高等学校卒業程度認定試験」の合格者にも入学資格が認められている。さらに、大学は個別の入学資格審査によって入学資格を認めることができる。
大学(学士課程)の卒業要件は、4年以上在学し124単位以上を修得すること(医学・歯学は6年以上188単位以上、薬学 [臨床目的]は6年以上186単位以上、獣医学は6年以上182単位以上)を原則とし、各大学が定めるとされている。卒業すると学士の学位が授与される。
なお、大学以外の教育施設が大学及び大学院の名称を用いることは法律で禁じられている。

A university is a higher education institution whose purpose is to teach wide-raging knowledge, conduct teaching and research in the arts and sciences, and develop intellectual, moral and applied abilities as a hub of learning.
The general eligibility for admission is the completion of 12 years of school education or of a designated program of school education of elementary and secondary education level. Those individuals are also eligible who have completed 12 years of school education abroad or is equivalent thereto, who hold the International Baccalaureate, Abitur, Baccalaureate, or General Certificate of Education Advanced Level, and who have passed the Upper Secondary School Equivalency Examination, the examination which certifies academic achievements equivalent to those of the completion of 12 years of school education. Universities may determine eligibility on the basis of their own assessment of equivalency.
The graduation requirement for undergraduate program, the specification of which is mandated to each institution, is generally enrollment for at least four years with no less than 124 credits earned, while at least six years and no less than 188 credits in the case of medicine and dentistry, at least six years and no less than 186 credits in the case of pharmaceutical sciences (clinical) and at least six years and no less than 182 credits in the case of veterinary medical science. Those who graduate are awarded bachelor’s degrees.
Education institutions other than universities are legally prohibited from using the title of "university (大学daigaku or 大学院 daigakuin)".
