学術を振興し、独創的・先駆的な研究を発展させることを目的として人文・社会科学から自然科学に至るあらゆる分野の学術研究活動を対象に助成される仕組み。通称、「科研費」と呼ばれる。日本最大規模の競争的研究資金制度である。独立行政法人日本学術振興会における基金（学術研究助成基金助成金）及び国の補助金（科学研究費補助金）により助成される。公募制となっており、各研究者が提出する研究計画書に基づき、ピア・レビューによる審査が行われる。研究種目により文部科学省又は独立行政法人日本学術振興会が取り扱う。

A mechanism that provides financial assistance for academic research activities in every field with the objective of promoting scholarship and advancing creative and pioneering research. It is commonly called “KAKENHI.” It is Japan’s largest competitive research funding program. It is a competitive system in which, in response to an open call, researchers submit a research proposal, which then undergoes peer review. Some research categories are handled by MEXT, while others are handled by the JSPS (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science).
