Rubric

Rubric

A matrix for assessment, composed of a rating scale that indicates the assessment standard and a description of features that should be present at each level of the scale. The explanations of each rating scale are expressed in a descriptive format, to facilitate judgments as to what kind of content needs to be evident at each level of the scale. Accordingly, rubrics are used for performance appraisals and other evaluations of qualitative aspects that are difficult to express in quantitative terms. For example, in grading, the description of features for a rating scale of “Excellent,” “Good,” and “Achieved” would take a form such as “Can xxx appropriately,” “Can xxx,” and “Understands xxx,” respectively. Rubrics are prepared beforehand by those conducting evaluations and often shared with learners, thereby enabling learners to understand what performance is expected of them and to pursue their studies accordingly. Rubrics also assist in fairer evaluation and in facilitating feedback on evaluation results between those conducting evaluations and learners.
