College of Technology 高等専門学校

College of Technology is a type of higher education institution that provides integrated five-year professional education placing emphasis on experiments and practicums. These HEIs train graduates of lower secondary school into practical and creative engineers who are employed in the manufacturing industry. As programs at colleges of technology begin with upper secondary education, the requirement for admission is, like high schools, successful completion of lower secondary education in the Japanese education system. The program length is five years (five years and six months in the case of mercantile shipping) and students are required to earn no less than 167 credits to graduate (147 or more in the case of mercantile shipping). Students who graduate may use the academic title of associate. In terms of graduates’ career paths, about 60% enter employment, while about 40% go on to further study, with graduates able to be admitted to a college of technology (advanced course) or to transfer to a university’s undergraduate program.
